8:00pmJerry Marsden:
In the last few years remarkable progress has been made in the area of discrete mechanics with applications to
optimal control (DMOC) and, coupled with trend optimization, has been useful in design. I will explain some of the ideas along with applications (to, for example, space mission design and robotic walkers) and refer to some of the posters of Sina Ober-Blöbaum and Sigrid Leyendecker for details. I will also give an introduction to Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) along with a few applications and give pointers to the poster of Philip DuToit. The final topic will be model reduction for molecular systems using radii of gyration, with pointers to the work of Philip DuToit and Tomohiro Yanao.
