Three topics are addressed. First, a regenerative machine tool vibration model is proposed in the form of delay-differential equations including both discrete and continuous time delays. Stability charts are presented for different weight functions which describe different stress distributions on the active face of the tool. Second, experimental results will be presented for thread cutting which initiate the third topic, the question of relevant non-linear effects in the model, bifurcation and singular perturbation analysis, and the possible existence of chaotic and/or transient chaotic behavior.
