Empirical eigenfunctions (proper orthogonal decomposition) are presented as a tool of finite element model dimension reduction, with potential applications in, for instance, re-analysis of changed models, engineering design optimization, and dynamic systems control. This topic is currently being investigated by the author within the framework of the OPAAL NSF project at Caltech. Both current results and projections to the future are discussed in depth.
