Instructions for Creating a CDS Technical Report

  1. Request a number for your technical report from the Caltech Online Digital Archive (CODA):

    Technical Report
    (eg. January 5, 2006)

    :
  2. You should receive an automatic confirmation email. Within a week or two, you will receive a number of the form yyyy.nnn, where yyyy is the year (eg. 2003) and nnn is the report number (eg. 008).

  3. Upload the report to the CDS technical report archive

    http://caltechcdstr.library.caltech.edu

Click on "Registered Users Area" at the bottom of the page. You will be prompted to log in. If you don't have an account, follow the links to create one. Once you are on the site, click on the button at the top of the page to upload your report to the server.

  4. You will be prompted to enter the information for the report on the web page.
Authors: fill in name as you want it to appear in database
    Person ID: leave blank
    Title: title of your paper
    Department: Control and Dynamical Systems
    Institution: California Institute of Technology
    Abstract: abstract for your paper
    Unique Identifier: CaltechCDSTR:yyyy.nnn
PURL: use the form show, with yyyy.nnn filled in
Month, year: fill in date you filed report
Status, publisher: fill in as appropriate
Alternative locations: include the URL of your copy of the report

You will be prompted to send a copy of the report to the homepage. Follow the prompts and eventually you will be asked to locate the file to be uploaded from your local machine.

  5. Once you have finished entering all of the information and a copy of the paper, you will be given the option of depositing the ePrint. Clicking on the "Deposit" button will send it to the library where it will be reviewed and then put online.

At any point in the process, you can stop entering data and then can go back to the User Area to continue the process at a later point. When you go to the User Area, you will see a list of all of the papers you are in the process of entering or the papers that are pending approval from the library staff.
