| Summer Study in Brazil |
The Control and Dynamical Systems Alliance (CDSA) is developing a shared curriculum at leading research and educational institutions in the US, Brazil and Sweden in the areas of Control and Dynamical Systems. These areas are well positioned to play a pivotal role over the next several years in shaping a common scientific language across a variety of disciplines, from Mechanical, Aerospace, and Environmental Engineering to BioEngineering, Communications, and Economics. This wide rage of applications makes these disciplines ideally suited for cross-disciplinary fertilization and it fosters applications attractive to a wide scientific audience. A key focus of the activity is in developing new approaches to education and outreach for the dissemination of basic ideas to non-traditional audiences.

for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), U.S.
Department of Education and the National Science Foundation.
Several courses are being developed by CDSA for use in teaching control and dynamical systems to non-traditional audiences.

A variety of programs are being developed under the CDSA:
Summer study in Brazil
US undergraduate and graduate students at any of the Alliance member schools may apply for summer study in Brazil. The program consists of 6 weeks of study in language and applied mathematics in Rio de Janiero, followed by a 8-10 week project in Campinas (near Sao Paolo). Applications are due by 1 December. Funding for travel and local expenses will be provided through the FIPSE program for those students who are accepted to participate. All students must take a 10-12 week introductory course in Portuguese (available at PCC, Princeton, and other sites) and will take a 4-6 week course in Portuguese in Rio de Janiero upon arrival in Brazil.
Fall and winter studies in the United States
US and Brazilian undergraduate and graduate students at any of the Alliance member schools may apply for study in the US in the fall and spring quarters at Caltech and UCSB (Oct-Mar) or fall semester at Princeton (Sep-Dec). During these periods, students will take courses in the host department and (optionally) participate in ongoing research projects. Funding is available for Brazilian students travelling to the US. Summer undergraduate research fellowships (SURF) at Caltech
US and Brazilian undergraduate students at any of the Alliance member schools may apply to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at Caltech. The SURF program provides research opportunities for undergraduates to work with Caltech faculty. Interested students should contact a CDSA faculty member at their home institution for more information. A Caltech faculty sponsor is required in order to apply to the SURF program. Applications are due around 1 March each year. More information available here.
Graduate student research in the US
Brazilian graduate students may apply to pursue research for 3-12 months at the US member schools under the supervision of a sponsoring faculty member at the host university. The research activities may be combined with classes, if appropriate. Interested students should contact the home university coordinator for more information on this program.
