Notes for CDS orientation with first year students
- Introductions
- Overview of the PhD program
- Year 1: courses + qualifying exam + choose an advisor; summer research
- Year 2: courses + candidacy exam (research based)
- Years 3-5: research + thesis defense
- Overview of courses
- First year courses: give main tracks + dependencies
- Advanced and intermittent courses
- The focus requirement: 27 units outside of CDS/math
- Funding
- GTA funding: 12 hours/week + GRA augment
- After first year, funding is handled through your advisor (contact option rep if there are any issues)
- Honor system
- Additional procedures and activities
- English language requirement
- CDS department activities:
- CDS tea: Wednesday, 3 pm
- CDS seminars: cds-mailer announcments
