Abstract: Environmental concerns, regulatory changes as well as the limited supply and increasing costs of fossil fuel based power sources is driving increased interest in having a higher the penetration of renewable energy in electric power grid. However, extensive use of these resources opens a number of research questions the variable nature of popular alternatives such as solar and wind power introduces a lot more uncertainty into the system. There have been many strategies put forth to address these challenges and session will explore several different approaches to manage the new uncertainty that a system with a high penetration of renewable resources will have to deal with from the perspective of fault recovery, optimal dispatch and energy market mechanisms. Many of the example strategies are demonstrated on topological examples inspired by transfer paths in US power grid.
