Memorial Lecture

Presenter: Dr. Alan Weinstein

Introduced by Dr. Barbara Lee Keyfitz

From July 18 – 22, 2011, mathematical scientists from around the world gathered in Vancouver, BC, Canada for the 7th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics — ICIAM 2011. The Congress took place at the state-of-the-art Vancouver Convention Centre on the waterfront in the heart of the city.

The Memorial Lecture : Introduction to Marsden & Symmetry  was given by Alan Weinstein, University of California, Berkeley. Alan was a colleague, co-author, and close friend of Jerry  from his Berkeley days.  Barbara Lee Keyfitz, Ohio State University, who met Jerry even before Alan, did the honors of introducing the speaker.

Jerrold Marsden, Carl F Braun Professor of Control and Dynamical Systems, Caltech, was  a member of the Steering Commitee and
co-Chair of the Scientific Organizing Committee along with Ivar Ekeland, Professor, Mathematics, University of British Columbia.  Sadly, he passed away before the event  took place. To honour Professor Marsden and the contributions he made to ICIAM 2011 and the scientific community, a series of special activities were held at the Congress to recognize his work.

Congress President, Arvind Gupta, Scientific Director, Mitacs and

Professor of Computer Science, University of British Columbia,

and Local Arrangements Committee Chair Jo-Anne Rockwood, MITACS

and their staff, did an outstanding job in organizing a successful Congress and making it possible to honor and pay tribute to Jerry through the special Memorial Activities.
