About Jerry

Jerrold (Jerry) E. Marsden* lost his 12-year long battle with cancer on the evening of Tuesday September 21, 2010, at age 68 years. He passed away quietly at his home in Pasadena, California, USA surrounded by family. Jerry was a beloved friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor to an enormous number of people around the world. He was a gifted professor who wanted to share as much knowledge as he could with all who worked with him. He will be greatly missed and remembered always.

Jerry Marsden Memorial Activities will be held on, July 18, 20 and 21, 2011 in Vancouver, BC, Canada as part of the 7th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics —ICIAM 2011. The PIMS Marsden Memorial Lecture Series was announced on Wednesday, October 12, 2011.
Organizing committee: Mark J Gotay, PIMS (Vancouver), Alan Weinstein, University of California (Berkeley), Tudor Ratiu, Bernoulli Institute (Lausanne), Anthony Bloch, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Darryl D Holm, Imperial College (London), and James Isenberg, University of Oregon (Eugene).

A Focus Program on Geometry, Mechanics and Dynamics, the Legacy of Jerry Marsden will be held in Toronto at The Fields Institute for the month of July 2012 in Jerry’s honor. Jerry was the founding director of The Fields Institute and this will be the start of the 20th anniversary year of celebrations of the institute.
