Jerry Marsden Memorial
Colleagues and friends remember

Jerry Marsden was at the forefront of applied mathematics and an important part of ICIAM 2011. When he sadly passed away last year it was a huge loss for the mathematics community. We go to one of the memorial sessions.

Alan Weinstein is a Professor of the Graduate School in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley.   He was a colleague of Jerry Marsden throughout Jerry’s career at Berkeley, and their joint papers on “Reduction of symplectic manifolds with symmetry” and “The Hamiltonian structure of the Maxwell-Vlasov equations” were fundamental contributions to geometric mechanics.

Katepalli R. Sreenivasan
gave the Welcome Speech at the Memorial Reception.

Katepalli Sreenivasan is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nonlinear Science and one of the Editors of the Springer-Verlag Applied Mathematics Sciences Series. He is University Professor in the Department of Physics and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, as well as the Senior Vice Provost at NYU.

Philip Holmes
a collaborator of Jerry’s from 1976, gave a short reminiscence of Jerry.

Phil Holmes, is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Professor of Applied Mathematics at Princeton University
