Abstract:  This talk will discuss the potential of existing automatic differentiation tools and their use in constructing adjoints from full-blown ocean general circulation models. Applications will then be discussed ranging from global ocean state estimations to optimizing a climate observing system. The implications of these tool for the wider geoscience community are enormous.
