Titan Wind Analysis using Lagrangian Coherent Structures

Han Bin Man

June 27, 2008

As far as my expectations on what I will be doing in this SURF project, I have a general encompassing feel for my upcoming task, as explained in my SURF proposal. Basically, I will first learn how the TitanWRF model works. This current model for the wind patterns on Titan will give me a feel for the characteristics of the wind patterns on the moon. This part of the project will be aspects that Claire will help me with because the this modeling system is her specialty. Then, I will be going over to the CDS side of the issue and work on analyzing these wind flows using LCS (Lagrangian Coherent Structures) analysis. I will have to load the LCS software and learn how to run and use it in a way that will assist me in actually analyzing the wind flows. This side of my project will be assisted by Phillip DuToit who is an expert in LCS analysis. Finally, as I make progress in running the LCS analysis in conjunction with the WRF modeling software, I will begin to look at the different boundaries found in the wind patterns, and try to find areas in the wind that can be helpful towards the Montgolfier balloon set to go to Titan. By determining how different starting points on the moon behave, that will help me determine a plan for a route the balloon can take to navigate around the moon, and the correct altitude or latitude (using external controls such as propeller perhaps) to take advantage of these wind conditions. With any significant progress I make, I will be reporting my findings with my mentor, Jerrold Marsden.

In terms of the work that I can expect to accomplish before our second CDS group meeting, I will start to get myself acquainted with the two systems I have to work with. Namely, I will begin reading papers and books to give me a feel for the wind conditions previously predicted on Titan. Then, I will have to learn the technical side of the project by acquainting myself with the WRF model and LCS software. To get these basics down, and learn how to implement these tools which will allow me to make progress in the SURF, is more than enough to keep me occupied until our next meeting.
