Why are the elements of the block diagram written in that specific order?

For any system (including the speed control slide in class), the block diagram indicates which subsystem outputs are connected to which subsystem inputs; for example, the input to the "process" is the external forces on the vehicle, which is the sum of the disturbance (force due to the hill) plus the output of the control law (which computes a force for the engine due to the difference between reference and vehicle motion). What matters then is that the arrow goes from the control law to the process; it is conventional to have most of the arrows going from left to right.
