How to Get to Caltech *

From Los Angeles International Airport:

Shuttle service is available from a multitude of companies, a list of local shuttle companies is available. To get a shuttle, exit the baggage claim area and look for the GREEN overhead "VAN STOP" sign. Tell the driver you are going to Caltech; if you are asked for an address or intersection, Hill and California is the southeast corner of campus (see the campus map for other streets).

Airport Bus Service is also available. LAX to Pasadena: The Airport Bus provides service from LAX to the Hilton Hotel (150 So. Los Robles, 3/4 mile west of Caltech) in Pasadena. One-way fare is $12; round-trip $20. At LAX look for the RED overhead "BUS STOP" sign located on the center islands. Look for buses with the Downtown Los Angeles and/or Pasadena destination sign on the front window of the bus. All buses go first to the Omni Hotel in Los Angeles, then continue on to Pasadena. Pasadena to LAX: Service from the Hilton Hotel is approx. hourly. The bus will stop at the Omni Hotel in Los Angeles for vouchering or ticketing prior to departing for LAX. Allow one hour of travel time to reach LAX. Call 1-800-772-5299 for more information.

If you are driving, take Sepulveda Blvd. to the Glen Anderson Fwy (105) east to the Harbor Fwy (110) north to the Pasadena Fwy, which becomes the Arroyo Parkway.

Or:

Take the San Diego Fwy (405) north to the Santa Monica Fwy (10) east to the Harbor Fwy (110) north to the Pasadena Fwy which becomes the Arroyo Parkway.

Then:

Take the Arroyo Parkway straight ahead (north); turn right (east) on Del Mar Blvd. Parking is available in several areas on the campus. You may park in any unnamed space.

 


From Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena Airport:

If you are driving, take the Golden State Fwy (Interstate 5) south to the Ventura Fwy (134) east to the Foothill Fwy (210) east. Exit Hill Avenue; turn right (south) onto Hill. Take Hill south to Del Mar Blvd.; turn right (west) onto Del Mar. Parking is available in several areas on the campus. You may park in any unnamed space.

 


From Ontario Airport:

If you are driving, take the San Bernardino Fwy (10) west to the Foothill Fwy (210); take the 210 west to Pasadena. Exit on Hill Ave; turn left (south) on Hill. Take Hill south to Del Mar Blvd.; turn right (west) onto Del Mar. Parking is available in several areas on the campus. You may park in any unnamed space.

 


If You're Driving

Caltech is easily accessible from both the 110 (Harbor) Freeway (southwest of campus) and the 210 (Foothill) Freeway (north of campus). Please look in our Maps section for maps of the local freeway system.

If you're taking the 110 freeway, follow the freeway north until it ends (becomes the Arroyo Parkway). Take the Arroyo Parkway straight ahead (north); turn right (east) on Del Mar Blvd. Parking is available in several areas on the campus. You may park in any unnamed space.

If you're taking the 210 freeway, exit on Hill Avenue; turn south on Hill. Take Hill south to Del Mar Blvd.; turn right (west) onto Del Mar. Parking is available in several areas on the campus. You may park in any unnamed space.

 


Public Transportation

Local Bus Service

Pasadena is served by two transit services. Foothill Transit serves Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley eastward; MTA, the regional transit agency, serves Pasadena and all of Los Angeles. The City of Pasadena also operates two free Area Rapid Transit Service (ARTS) shuttle bus lines. The Downtown ARTS bus stops on Wilson. Hours of operation are limited.

Hilton Hotel (Airport Bus stops here) in Pasadena to Caltech: Board the MTA 267 bus at Los Robles and Cordova; exit at Del Mar and Chester; cash full fare $1.35.

Downtown Los Angeles to Pasadena: The MTA 401 Express bus can be boarded on Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles, approx. 3 blocks west of Union Station. Cash full fare is $2.60; exit in Pasadena at Colorado and Wilson; Caltech is approx. 3 blocks south.

The MTA 485 bus boards at the Busway off of Alameda, in front of Union Station. exit at Lake and California in Pasadena and walk east to Caltech.

Caltech to JPL: Board the westbound MTA 177 bus on California Blvd.

General Information

The Caltech campus, Pasadena, and surrounding communities are easily accessible year-around by bicycle; Old Town Pasadena is within twenty minutes walking time.

Discounted monthly and weekly bus passes, as well as student passes, are available through both Foothill Transit and MTA. Full-fare tokens are also available in packages of 10 for $9 at MTA service centers and at many checking-cashing businesses. Bus and transit maps are not available in bookshops or other local businesses, but may be picked up at the Patsaouras Transit Plaza (behind Union Station) in Los Angeles or in the Keith Spalding building on the Caltech campus.
