Transient finite element simulations with contact and impact are widely used in engineering computations. Typical applications include simulation of metal forming processes, fragmentation of brittle solids, and crashworthiness analyses. The five snapshots from a high velocity sphere plate impact simulation give an impression of the complexities involved. This example is computed with the concurrent contact detection and solution library, which we are currently developing, and a thin-shell solver based on smooth subdivision surfaces. The contact library is also being used for large scale computations within the virtual shock physics facility at the Center for Simulating Dynamic Response of Materials at Caltech.
