CDS 104 -- Spring 2006
Third Term

Introductory Concepts for Dynamical Systems

Prerequisites:Ma 1 and Ma 2 (or equivalent);
it is recommended that this course be taken concurrently with CDS 273.

Course Description

CDS 104 is aimed at students who are new to nonlinear dynamics, especially those in chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. Our goal is to explain this subject in a direct and simple way, and to show how it can be used to understand the wonders of the nonlinear world. We will use the textbook written by Strogatz whose mathematical treatment is friendly and informal, yet still careful. Computation, concrete examples, and geometric intuition will be stressed. We will cover chapters on phase plane analysis, limit cycles, bifurcation as well as chaos, with applications to physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering. These materials should provide students with a good grounding on nonlinear methods.

Announcements

  • HOMEWORK: There will be one more homework (HW7), due May 26 at 5PM. The graded HWs will be returned to the students in the mail box on May 29 at noon. Shaunak will hold an office hour in the morning of May 30 (10-12 noon) to answer any question related to HW7.
  • FINAL: In order to have the same exam for the whole class (undergrad, senior, and grad), the final will be held on May 30. Please mark your calendar. It will be a take home exam (open book, open notes and homeworks, with pplane7 available). The questions will be passed out in class on May 30 and the exam will be collected the next day at noon.
  • EVALUATION: The Teaching Evaluation will be done on May 30.
