Grading
The final grade will be based on homework, class
participation (defined below), a midterm, and a final exam.
- Homework: 45%. There will be 8 or 9 problem sets,
due by 5:00 pm on Thursdays. Each problem set will have about 13 problems.
Of these 3 will be done by students
at Wednesday's discussion session, guided by the TA. The three problems will be made known to the class on Monday. One
student will be assigned to be the offical scribe as described below. Of the remaining ones, please see instructions in each homework. You might be asked to do only parts of them. Once a homework
problem set is made available on the web, consider it assigned. Late homework will
not be accepted without prior permission from the instructor.
- Class participation : 10%. Any
student who does at least one problem on the board AND writes up one
LaTeX solution as a solution scribe will get this 10% and will otherwise
get 0 for this component of the grade. In case you couldn't make the discussion session because of time conflict with other classes, go to discuss with one of the TAs for a solution.
- Midterm: No midterm
- Final exam: 45%.
Solution Scribe
In the Wednesday discussion session, one student will be assigned to be a scribe for each
problem. This student will be responsible for taking notes, and
writing up the solution in LaTeX. A handwritten solution will be given
to this student as a guide but the discussion done in class will have to
be incorporated into the LaTeX solution by the scribe. A template LaTeX
file will be provided (Please go to Assignment page for LaTeX template file and a sample pdf file).
Homework and Exam Policy
- Collaboration on homework assignments is allowed. You may
consult outside reference materials, other students, the TA, or the
instructor. All solutions that are handed in should reflect your
understanding of the subject matter at the time of writing.
- No collaboration is allowed on the midterm or the final exam.
