How do I FTP files to and from CDS?

Unless files need to be exchanged with someone who does not have a CDS account, the preferred method for transferring files to and from the cluster is an SCP client, which provides an encrypted session for both passwords and data. If files need to be transferred to or from people without CDS accounts, FTP will allow anonymous uploads and downloads. The CDS FTP server can be accessed at ftp.cds.caltech.edu.
To share files from on-campus via FTP:
Log in to ftp.cds.caltech.edu using your CDS account, create a directory and place your files there. Anonymous users can browse and retrieve them.
Other methods for people with accounts to place and retrieve files to the FTP directory:
- From a Linux workstation, change to /home/ftp/pub
- From Windows or MacOS, access the Samba share at \\pcfiles.cds.caltech.edu\ftp"
To share files from off-campus via FTP:
Log in as the anonymous user, no password is required. Change to the incoming directory, which is a "drop box" for uploads by anyone. To help prevent use of the site for warez, anonymous users can't browse files in the incoming directory, including those they have placed there. Files more than 28 days old in incoming are automatically deleted.
